Washington Market School

  • Attributes:Montessori, Coed, Nonsectarian
  • Grade Levels:PK-K

In Their Own Words: The Washington Market School is a non-profit, non-sectarian educational organization. It serves a Preschool, Kindergarten and Afterschool center for children ages 2 to 6 years. The School was founded in 1976 by Ronnie Moskowitz in her loft. With the support of local artists and early neighborhood pioneers, the School grew and thrived. In 1992, the School opened its second site at 134 Duane Street for children 18 months to 3-3.75 years. Washington Market has always been an integral part of Tribeca, and is the first Montessori-affiliated Early Childhood center on the Lower East Side. The School's program blends the creative educational experience of the open classroom with the supportive guidance and structure of the challenging Montessori-based curriculum. Maria Montessori was the first woman in Italy to receive a degree in medicine. She worked as a doctor, professor and advocate of women's rights, but is best known as a great educator. Her fundamental realization about children was that the child is the creator of his/her own life. It combines corresponding materials and activities with the individual freedom, social experiences and adult guidance necessary for each child to fulfill his/her developmental needs.
